Founder & Artist Director

A talented choreographer, performer and teacher, Shivani Thakkar established the MKM BollyStars in Canada in 2010, and in Los Angeles in 2012. Helmed with international performance credits Shivani has served as the Associate Artistic Director of Manu Kala Mandir Dance Productions and Academy for over a decade, and is the Founder and Artistic Director of the MKM BollyStars in Canada and US.

Shivani’s work includes specialties in Bharata Natyam (Indian classical dance), Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Ballet, and Bollywood. Her choreography can be seen in the Global Intel Print Ad “Our Superstars”, Omni Canada’s Bollywood Top Ten, POP! -A Michael Jackson Tribute (MTLA Theatre), Girish Karnad’s Naga Mandala (USC), and for various dance companies including Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company (Washington DC), Vinok World Dance (Edmonton, Canada), John Britto Dance Company (Chennai, India), Karmagraphy, and her own MKM BollyStars.

As a performer she has had the fortune of working with a variety of artists in a multitude of mediums. She has performed with Shahid Kapoor and Akshay Kumar; worked with choreographers Marty Kudelka, Jamal Sims, Mary Ann Kellogg, and Ganesh Acharya; and been in numerous television and film productions. Her performance credits include: Disney’s Step Up 3-D, Nickelodean’s Big Time Rush, Bellydance Superstars’ Bombay Bellywood Japan Tour, Canadian tour of Dvaya: A Confluence of Male Female Spirits, Bollywood films Chance Pe Dance and Deewana Hue Pagal, Vanitha Film Industry Awards (India), Opening Ceremonies – Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (office of Los Angeles Mayor Villariogsa), Mayor’s Evening for Business and Arts Excellence Awards (Calgary) and more. She was a Principal dancer in Shatarang a special performance part of the exhibition Gifts of the Sultan running at the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts (www.lacma.org) as well as a lead in Orion: The Great Man of the Sky part of the exhibition In Wonderland at LACMA in 2012. Other credits include The Sensual-S at the Smithsonian Museum, Feats Festival of Dance (2008, 2009), IAAC’s Erasing Borders: Festival of Indian Dance (NYC), Battery Dance Company’s Downtown Dance Days, DC Dance Festival at Dance Place, Indian Film Festival Los Angeles (IFFLA 2013, 2014), and the SoCal Dance Invitational.

We have dance classes for all ages from 3 through adults and also a special class to get couples dancing with our Couples on the Dance Floor class. Screening on February 21, 2015, the film features the legend Pepe Serna and producer/actress Jade Puga; directed by Richard Montes.
